“It is our distinct honor to recognize the work that brands, organizations, and individuals are all making to create an impact in their community,” said Jessica Lauretti, Managing Director, The Anthem Awards. “We launched this platform to show the world that all corners of our culture, from sports and entertainment to business leaders and celebrities, are all standing up to say, it is time for systemic change and that social good is what we value as a society.”

TrollBusters submitted work in three Human and Civil Rights categories:

  • Awareness Campaign – Non-Profit
    Medal Class: Silver
  • Best Brand Campaign
    Medal Class: Silver
  • Product, Service or Innovation
    Medal Class: Silver

“We are thrilled to be recognized for this work especially now, when hostilities against journalists are rampant online and off,” Ferrier said. “The freedom of the press is being challenged all around the globe and journalists have been targeted with extreme hate and violence. TrollBusters has been flying alongside journalists and newsrooms providing educational support, training, and awareness to help journalists navigate these online harms and stay safe telling these crucial stories,” Ferrier said.

The inaugural Anthem Awards are hosted by the same organization that produces The Webby Awards, the internet’s highest honor. The Anthem Awards celebrate purpose and mission-driven work in the social impact area. In an email to winners, Lauretti said, “Selection as a winner means the work not only demonstrates world class talent, insight, leadership, and execution, it is also a best in class example of the work leading the way in the Impact Industry.”

Anthem Winners are selected by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS). Members include Daniel Dae Kim (actor, producer, and activist);  Ashley Judd (Author, Actor, and Social Justice Humanitarian); Mitchell Baker (CEO and chairwoman, Mozilla); Lisa Sherman (president and CEO, Ad Council), Sarah Kate Ellis (president and CEO, GLAAD); Renata Erlikhman (chief investment officer, OW Management); Shayla Tait (director of philanthropy, The Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation); Russlynn Ali (CEO and co-founder, XQ Institute); Marc Ecko (chief commercial officer and board member, XQ Institute); Heidi Arthur (chief campaign development officer, Ad Council); and Alexis M. Herman (chair and chief executive officer, New Ventures, and former U.S. secretary of labor).

Ferrier, TrollBusters founder, said the recognition by IADAS and the Anthem Awards team is humbling, especially given the other projects submitted as part of the competition, such as Mother Jones: The Democracy Beat, Born this Way Foundation’s #BeKind21 campaign and a submission by It Gets Better Project.

TrollBusters launched Toxic Avenger magazine in August 2021 to provide ongoing training and support to journalists and newsrooms. Each issue covers topics of digital safety and resilience, workflow changes, and digital security around the globe. The February issue features cancel culture, fake news and smear campaigns with solutions for fighting back against online harms. The cover story by Ferrier “When Cancel Culture Hits Home,” describes why she started TrollBusters and the solutions she’s developed over the years to fight for justice online and off.

Winners for the inaugural Anthem Awards will be celebrated at the first annual Anthem Voices conference followed by a star-studded virtual Awards Show on Monday, February 28, 2022.  Fans will be able to hear from social impact leaders during the day and then watch the show, featuring special moments, and hallmark speeches from winners at Malala Fund, The Daily Show With Trevor Noah, Bubba Wallace, BBC, Snap Inc.
